Working on Public Land
Council trees live in spaces that are rarely quiet. Parks, reserves, sports grounds, streetscapes, and walkways see continuous public use, which means the work has to be planned around people who aren't part of the job and have no reason to expect it.
We're set up for that. Working on public land means managing pedestrian and vehicle movement around the site, keeping the public well clear of the work area, and leaving the space clean and safe to use as soon as we're done. The standard we work to is that members of the public are never put at risk and the disruption to a public space is kept as short as possible.
Approved Contractor Standards
Councils can only engage contractors who meet their procurement and compliance requirements - the right qualifications, insurance, safety systems, and a track record of delivering. That bar exists for good reason, and it's one we already clear.

Council tree assets are varied: mature specimen trees in parks, street and berm trees through residential and town-centre streetscapes, plantings across reserves and sports grounds, and trees in and around public facilities. Each comes with its own management needs and its own public profile.
We provide the ongoing arboricultural work these assets need - structural and formative pruning, deadwood removal, clearance from roads, footpaths, lines and sightlines, health assessments, and removal where a tree can no longer be safely retained. The focus is on keeping public trees healthy, safe, and contributing to the spaces they sit in for as long as they reasonably can.
Protected, Notable, and Scheduled Trees
A significant part of council tree management involves trees that carry additional protection - notable and scheduled trees under the district plan, heritage plantings, and significant specimens that the community values and the rules safeguard.
This work calls for more than the right equipment. It needs arborists who understand the obligations attached to protected trees and who can carry out sensitive work - or advise against work - in line with them. The same care applies where trees sit within ecologically or culturally significant areas, sites of value to mana whenua, or landscapes with archaeological constraints, where the right approach is as much about what not to do as what to do. We're used to operating in that space and providing councils with assessments and recommendations that respect both the health of the tree and the framework protecting it.
Risk Assessment and Reporting for Public Accountability
Public tree management has to be defensible. Decisions about whether a tree stays, gets worked on, or comes out may need to be explained to the public, justified against a budget, or stood behind if something goes wrong. Keeping Track of Council Tree Assets
A council's trees are public assets, and they're easier to manage well when there's a clear, current record of what's there. Maintaining existing trees is only part of the job as councils are also working to protect and grow tree cover over time. Good tree care supports that directly. The first aim is always to retain a healthy tree rather than remove it, and to keep it in good condition for as long as it can safely contribute to the canopy.
Where a tree does have to come out, we can advise on suitable replacements with species and locations that will establish well and add to long-term cover rather than create the same problems again. Managing the existing canopy carefully and replacing thoughtfully is how tree cover is held and grown across public land, and it's a perspective we bring to the work rather than treating each job in isolation.
